Blue Martini toasts marketing app

Saying they aim to make computers more portable, intuitive and easy-to-use, a group of industry stalwarts formally launched Motion Computing Monday, with plans to unveil the new company's first tablet PC prototype at the TechXNY trade show next month.

The fresh-faced company, whose founders hail from the likes of Dell Computer Corp., Apple Computer Inc., Compaq Computer Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd., is promising to expand the capabilities of mobile computing by leveraging technologies such as electronic ink, handwriting recognition and voice capabilities.

The company's first product is a slate-like tablet PC which will use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP Tablet PC Edition software. The tablet PC prototype will be previewed at the TechXNY, scheduled to take place in New York June 25 through June 27, and will feature pen and speech-based input, the company said.

General availability for the company's first product is set for later this year, a company spokesman said.

The new Austin, Texas, company is led by Chief Executive Officer Scott Eckert. Eckert was a general manager for several of Dell's international operations and used to head the PC giant's Internet operations, Motion Computing said.

The newcomer is currently in the midst of securing its first round of funding, totalling around US$8 million, according to the spokesman. While the tablet PC is Motion Computing's first foray into the market, the company said that it has plans to launch a broad range of products that center on mobility, wireless capabilities and innovative designs.
