Fortinet Announces Top Technology Threats for February 2007

 • 01 March, 2007 17:55

Fortinet – the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced the most threatening reported malware activities and top 10 threats for February 2007.

Top 10 threats caught for February 2007 include:
#1 HTML/BankFraud.E!phish 7.97%,
#2 HTML/Volksbanken!phish 6.96%,
#3 HTML/BankFraud.OD!phish 3.91%,
#4 W32/Tibs.gen 3.91%,
#5 W32/Netsky.P@mm 2.61%,
#6 HTML/Iframe_CID!exploit 2.32%,
#7 W32/Zhelatin.DE@mm 2.31%,
#8 W32/Bagle.GT@mm 1.77%,
#9 W32/Grew.A!worm 1.24%,
#10 W32/Sality.Q 1.03%.

The malware report, compiled from all FortiGate™ multi-threat security systems in production worldwide, is a service of the global security research team that supports Fortinet’s FortiGuard Network™, which provides continuous updates to help protect against the latest threats around the clock and around the world.

This month’s list exhibits the same stability of January’s report, with phishing threats still in the top spots. However, currently the most notorious threat on this list is W32/Tibs.gen, aka “Storm Worm,” which continues to severely impact worldwide mailboxes in successive waves. According to Guillaume Lovet, EMEA threat response team leader for Fortinet, no less than 36 different variants of the Storm Worm were seen active this month, although one variant itself accounted for nearly 60 percent of related detections.

“The overwhelming presence of the Storm Worm is not without consequence, as it is being leveraged to generate and relay massive amounts of spam,” Lovet said. “However, the battle against spam is not lost. A purely factual analysis of the situation tends to prove that in the final race to arms against content analysis filters – such as those featured in Fortinet’s offering – spammers are losing ground.”
