Australians Like Smart Handheld Devices, Finds IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, 8th June, 2004 – In the first quarter of 2004 the Smart Handheld Device (SHD) market saw notable growth of 66.7% and an increase of 10.2% from Q4 2003 in unit shipment terms. After declining by five percentage points in the final quarter of 2003, the Pen-based space saw small growth of 0.5% in Q1 2004. The strongest area of growth were voice-centric devices which saw growth of 35.2% in units shipped.</p>
<p>"The growth in the SHD market in Q1 2004 was largely driven by converged devices – specifically voice centric. With a number of converged devices set to be released in the second half of 2004, the stage is being set for further growth in this market space," said Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst.</p>
<p>Mercie Clement, IDC Associate Analyst added, "From an Operating System perspective, Microsoft grew by 41.3% sequentially, while Palm declined by 39.4% over the same period. The third position went to Symbian, which grew by 15.9% from the final quarter of 2003."</p>
<p>The first quarter of 2004 saw HP take the number one position with 35.6% share of units shipped in the SHD market. Falling from the top spot, palmOne finished just ahead of Nokia with 13.5% share for second place. Nokia continued to grow its share of the market, finishing in third position with 13.3% share. Rounding out the top 5 were Motorola and RIM with 7.5% and 7.3% market share respectively.</p>
