UniSA Selects Alphawest for Network Infrastructure Upgrade Project

 • 05 December, 2005 15:14

Alphawest today announced that it has been selected by the University of South Australia (UniSA) to implement the University’s major network infrastructure upgrade project. The new network will deliver the capacity to support UniSA’s e-research communications requirements as well as providing a platform for the launch of IP Telephony in 2007. The network will also support e-learning services provided to the University’s 32,000 students on campus, in Australia and in many countries overseas.

The objective of the project is to provide a highly available, integrated and reliable network with increased bandwidth, improved performance and centralised management facilities.

Initially the upgrade will establish the core and distribution network infrastructure together with centralised network management systems, closely followed by access and extended distribution network layers in 2006.

UniSA selected Alphawest due to its strong local presence, and its design and implementation skills that will support UniSA’s high performance network requirements.

Implementing a design based on Cisco Systems equipment, Alphawest will work closely with the University’s network services staff to ensure a smooth transition from the University’s current network to the new high performance infrastructure. The upgrade path proposed by Alphawest will be seamless and offer a continuous level of service to the University’s staff and students.

Garry Henley, Alphawest’s CEO, said: “Alphawest continues to invest in the Adelaide market and is proud to have been selected by the University of South Australia to undertake this project. Our Adelaide team has already started working with the University in the project design phases and we look forward to working together during the implementation phase to further the University’s profile within the increasingly competitive Australasian education market.”

UniSA’s Director of IT, Paul Sherlock said: “The need to deliver increasingly sophisticated network services across multiple campuses meant that we had to select a partner and a solution that would meet not just our requirements now, but support our vision for the future. Our staff and students will benefit enormously from the increased reliability, capacity, flexibility and security offered by the new network.”
