Notebook Sales Decline and SHD Usage Increases, Finds IDC

 • 31 May, 2004 09:28

NORTH SYDNEY, May 31st, 2004 – IDC has recently completed the second study in the Buying Behaviour and Trends report series covering the local enterprise (250+ employees) market titled, "Business Selection Criteria for Mobile Computing Environments." The key findings from the study were that the overall spending on notebooks is expected to experience a marginal decrease in the 250+ employee segment in the following twelve months according to survey respondents.

The study focuses on the notebook PC, tablet PC, and smart handheld device buying criteria, vendor preference, market trends, and forecast analysis affecting the enterprise market in Australia.

"End-users have indicated that the planned spend on notebooks will see a minor decline over the coming twelve months in the 250+ employee space. However, spending on smart handheld devices is expected to see a marked increase, and tablet PCs with a slight increase in spending as well,” said, Michael Sager, Market Analyst stated.

IDC sees that vendors will need to diversify their approach to the large enterprise space and look to push other mobile devices.

"There is growth for SHDs, and to a lesser extent Tablet PCs expected over the coming twelve months. Another critical area for vendors and channel partners to examine is the potential for the sales of peripherals such as wireless keyboard, mice etc. The notebook market has grown faster than the planning for ergonomics. The 'paperless office' has given way to the 'three ring binder revolution' whereby users utilise old office materials to bring their notebook back to eye level,” added Mr Sager

The following points are the key technology areas that vendors should focus on over the coming twelve months:

· Notebook PCs- The government sector is expected to see minimal business outside of key tenders with the election year. The top two areas for potential growth according to survey respondents are education/healthcare and the combined manufacturing/resource /construction sector.

· Smart Handheld Devices- End-users have indicated they will increase their spending in this market, but it will only grow so far, given the current marketing strategies of vendors for SHDs in the commercial space. The survey respondents also indicated important shifts in their vendor preference for the next twelve months with HP maintaining but Palm losing favour to the competition.

"It will be important for vendors in the notebook market to recognize the need to focus on key verticals, and push peripheral products." added Mr. Sager
