Brocade expands into host bus adapters

Brocade has leaped into host bus adapters via a partnership with LSI and the acquisition of Silverstream Systems

Brocade on Thursday announced the latest of its storage-area network expansion plans -- the company is getting into the US$1 billion host bus adapter market.

Buoyed by a quarter in which revenue for its file-area network products doubled, Brocade made the leap into host bus adapters via a partnership with LSI and the acquisition of Silverstream Systems.

Brocade says that only as many as 20 percent of servers are attached to shared storage and that playing in the host bus adapter market will fully complement its storage-area network offerings of Fibre Channel switches and directors, and SAN and file-area network software. The market for host bus adapters, which has been controlled by QLogic and Emulex, is estimated to be approximately US$1.1 billion this year, according to market research firm Dell'Oro Group.

Brocade will introduce its 2110 iSCSI Initiator host bus adapter that allows Windows or Linux servers to connect to the Gigabit Ethernet network and send block-based SAN data across it. The host bus adapter will be based on technology acquired from Silverstream.

Brocade is also launching a family of 4Gbps Fibre Channel host bus adapters that will connect servers to SAN storage. The host bus adapters will feature single and dual ports, and support a variety of operating systems. This host bus adapter will be offered in partnership with LSI.

Brocade also outlined plans to manufacture 8Gbps Fibre Channel and 10Gbps Ethernet products in 2008.

The Brocade 2110 iSCSI Initiator is available now from Brocade OEMs such as EMC IBM and HP. The Brocade 4Gbps Fibre Channel host bus adapters are expected to be available by the end of this month.
