Western Digital joins Seagate and Hitachi with its own 750GB hard drive

One year after the first 750GB hard drive debuted, Western Digital joins Seagate and Hitachi with its own 750GB offering. Western Digital's WD Caviar SE16 750GB Serial ATA hard drive carries a variety of performance specs: performance with 3 Gb/s transfer rate, 16 MB cache and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). The drive also uses a trio of Western Digital technologies to boost performance and reliability.

According to Western Digital, SecurePark improves long-term durability and shock resistance by parking the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and non-operational moments. StableTrac reduces operational vibration by securing the drive's motor shaft at both ends. A third technology, IntelliSeek, controls the drive's actuator so the drive head more smoothly reaches its target sector just at the right time to read the next piece of information. Western Digital says the technology reduces power consumption by more than 60 percent as compared with drives without IntelliSeek; and, it reduces vibration, too.

The drive, model number WD7500AAKS, is shipping now, and priced at US$249.
