Networking Equipment Redefines & Refines Today’s Enterprise Networks, Finds IDC

 • 09 July, 2007 13:50

NORTH SYDNEY, 9th July 2007 – IDC’s latest industry research and analysis reveals that both Australian LAN and WLAN networking markets continue to grow at higher than expected rates. The routing market has been driven by strong demand from carrier deployments however 2007 will be the year of challenge as most carrier deals come to an end. Switching growth remain strong especially in Layer 3 due to deployments of intelligent switching at the edge.

IDC’s latest report, titled "Australian Networking Equipment 2007-2011 Forecast and Analysis: Multi-Paths, Several Ways to the Pearly Gateway," assesses the key drivers for networking growth including carrier deployments in the core, the enterprise market shift from TDM to IP voice technology and fast ethernet to gigabit ethernet.

"Increasing bandwidth pipe size is not the answer. The demand for networks has moved away from pure capacity play towards optimising and accelerating the data over the existing bandwidth. Increasing efficiency in current infrastructure investment via WAN acceleration and intelligent switching has proven to provide higher ROI by reducing TCO and increasing efficiency. IDC sees WAN optimization as the next technology must have," said Godwin Lee, IDC Associate Analyst, Enterprise Networks.

IDC’s Key findings in this study include:

• In 2006, IDC sized the overall Australian networking equipment market at $882.82 US Million and raised its forecast to $947.48 US Million by 2011 with a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 1%. One of the main drivers in LAN switching has been the need to support voice applications as the enterprise telephony market continues strong growth.

• IDC recommends that vendors must continue to improve networking technology in their products. Carelessly re-marketing and refreshing existing product lines based on existing technology is not the answer, but product development based on the ability to meet customer requirements is more important.

• Application acceleration is the next step forward and as customers are increasingly educated to their own requirements and solutions, integrators should be one step ahead in assisting the customer to deploy an end to end smart networks solution that addresses the individual business requirements.

"Within the channels, vendors and partners have realised their need to co-operate effectively in order to win customers. Vendors have revised their channel programs and designed new models to provide support tools for partners and integrators, which will give them an advantage in the market. In the future, this strong relationship will help vendors penetrate further into the elusive Small to Medium enterprise market," Added Mr Lee.
