Italian Chamber approves Linux

All 630 representatives in the Italian Chamber of Deputies are now allowed to request Linux for their PCs and laptops to replace current software, typically based on the Windows/Office platform.

The decision was taken this week at a chamber committee meeting attended by technology advisors from the various Italian parties represented in the Chamber of Deputies.

The meeting was called at the request of two deputies of the center-left party DS (Democratici di Sinistra), Pietro Folena and Franco Grillini. The two deputies are proposing a package of actions to reduce the costs of the Italian Parliament, composed of two chambers with equal power, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

"Not only is the adoption of an open source system a technological innovation, it also helps to save Euro 3 million each year," Grillini told the Italian daily 'La Repubblica.' About 3,500 computers are in use in the Chamber of Deputies, and each Office licence costs Euro 900, Grillini said.

The Province of Bolzano, in northern Italy, saved Euro 1 million moving to Linux, Folena told La Repubblica.

Meanwhile, the Italian Parliament is adopting Wi-Fi, in a plan to cover parts of Montecitorio, the seat of the Chamber of Deputies in Rome.
