Avis Australia Successfully Switches to Wyse Thin Client, Drops PCs

 • 25 July, 2007 12:14

Reduces Network Costs, Lowers Operating Costs and Improves Security at Airports and Branches.

Sydney, Australia – 25 July, 2007 - Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today announced that Avis Australia had successfully upgraded its Australia-wide rental car operation with Wyse thin clients.

In late 2004, Avis Australia deployed an initial 80 thin clients from Wyse, rising to nearly 400 by the end of 2006 which were distributed to over 150 rental stations around the country. Loaded with both legacy and high-speed I/O ports, the Wyse units provided the core for a broad range of thin client environments.

“Using thin clients, we’ve managed to control spiralling network costs without the requirement of purchasing and managing hundreds of additional PCs. The lack of moving parts in the Wyse units translates to absolutely silent operation and in all likelihood a long lifespan given there is nothing to wear out," explained Nick Duddy, Technical Services Manager for Avis Australia.

Avis Rental Service Agents in airports and branch outlets use “Wizard”, a global reservation application to perform a range of functions at the counter, including checking customers in and out, producing customer documents and operational reports. Wizard is also responsible for the management of the Avis fleet of vehicles.

The objective was to identify a solution which offered the functionality of the IBM SNA terminals, but ran in the contemporary Ethernet / IP environment. According to Nick Duddy; “We weren’t keen on a major development effort to support new terminals. We were happy to change but our timeframes didn’t allow for prolonged testing so we needed a low risk solution. Finding a new terminal that just dropped into the existing environment would be ideal.”

After extensive testing Duddy selected Wyse thin client technology. “They can be booted in seconds and with no data stored locally and security is enhanced. Because the file system is read-only to a normal user, no unintended changes can be made, reducing support calls. So many IT projects get blown out of control, but this one couldn’t have been simpler. We’ve implemented thin clients from Wyse at service desks in 150 airports and branch outlets across Australia. We’ve developed a strong relationship with Wyse and I can see that continuing for some time to come,” Duddy said. “Keeping it simple was definitely the right choice.”

Commenting on behalf of Wyse, northern region manager, Ward Nash said, “Avis has accomplished a seamless and cost effective transition from older terminal technology to the latest in thin client computing, with clear operational and investment cost savings. We congratulate them on a smooth implementation.”

About Wyse Technology

Wyse Technology is the global leader in thin computing. Wyse and its partners deliver the hardware, infrastructure software, and services that comprise thin computing, allowing people to access the information they need using the applications they want, but with better security, manageability, and at a much lower total cost of ownership than a PC. Thin computing allows CIOs and senior IT professionals to reduce costs, manage risk, and deliver access to information. Wyse partners closely with industry leaders Microsoft, Citrix, VMware, and others to achieve this objective. Wyse is headquartered in San Jose, California, with offices worldwide and ANZ head office in North Sydney, NSW.
