Intel Delivers New Features For Home And Office PCs

 • 26 May, 2005 12:51

SYDNEY, Australia, May 26, 2005 – Intel Corporation today unveiled two products, or 'platforms' for home and office PCs with innovative features to enable consumers to do more simultaneously with their digital content, and businesses to enhance PC security, system management and collaboration capabilities.

The platforms combine Intel’s latest microprocessors, chipsets (the “glue” between the microprocessor and the rest of the PC), communications silicon, software and other technologies, and are designed from the ground up to work as a unit to meet consumer and business needs.

For home PCs, Intel developed a new platform to enrich and improve the entertainment experience. The platform includes the Intel® Pentium® D processor with two processing cores - or “brains” - and the Intel® 945 Express Chipset family with support for such features as surround-sound audio, high-definition video, and enhanced graphics capabilities. Consumers today are using their PCs to enjoy the growing amount of digital content including music, videos and photos, and accomplish more tasks simultaneously, for example, playing a game while recording a TV show in the background. With a home network and a PC based on Intel’s Pentium D processor and 945 Express Chipset, multiple audio, video or gaming streams can be routed to different people in the home simultaneously.

For office PCs, Intel introduced the Professional Business Platform, a new PC category which combines the company’s advanced security, management and collaboration technologies and packages them together at mainstream price points. The enhancements include the introduction of Intel® Active Management Technology (AMT), which will enable IT managers to monitor and help maintain every PC on their networks even if they are turned off, or have a failed hard drive or operating system. For example, with Intel AMT businesses will be able to install security patches or diagnose problems regardless of the status of the computer. The Professional Business Platform is based on the new Intel® 945G Express Chipset and the optional Intel® PRO/1000 PM network adapter, the recently introduced Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology1 600 sequence.

“Based on a unique suite of technologies and validated components, Intel’s new home and office platforms mark a new era in personal computing that will change the way people work, communicate, entertain and play,” said Robert Crooke, vice president, Intel Digital Enterprise Group and general manager, Business Client Group. “The new platforms exemplify Intel’s recent corporate strategy and alignment around the development of tailored platforms for specific market segments, and to provide business and consumer-centric features beyond sheer processing speed.”

Dual-Core Processors, Feature-Rich Chipsets Power the Digital Home

As part of its effort to enable consumers to enjoy digital content – including music, games, photos and home video – on multiple interoperable devices throughout the home, Intel developed its first mainstream, dual-core processor based-platform based on the Intel Pentium D processor and Intel 945 Express Chipset family. The platform has unique features to enable more powerful PCs that can multitask, manage multiple users and their personal content, while also incorporating consumer-electronic-like capabilities and features.

The ability of Intel’s new dual-core processor based PC platform to run multiple high-bandwidth streams of information simultaneously makes it ideal for delivering entertainment in any room in the house. For example, a child could play a game on a Pentium D processor-based PC in the bedroom, while a parent in the living room uses a remote control and a digital media adapter connected to the TV to access home videos stored on the same PC.

PCs based on Intel’s platform for the digital home also help consumers to create a theatre-like experience right inside the home. Consumers can enjoy incredible audio quality on their PC with Intel® High Definition Audio that supports up to 7.1 surround sound and the ability to send multiple audio streams simultaneously through the PC’s output jacks to multiple rooms or devices in the home. With the new Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950, 3-D graphics performance increases nearly two times over previous generations. It also delivers vivid colours and enriched picture quality on the PC as well as support for a wide range of displays, including 1080i. The Intel GMA 950 provides optional support for a Media Expansion Card to bring favourite TV shows right to the home PC, including capabilities for picture-in-picture to view two TV channels at once, and personal video recorder features to watch, record or pause live TV.

Finally, improved Intel® Matrix Storage Technology option adds support for new RAID 5 and 10 levels to the previously supported RAID 0 and 1, effectively increasing storage performance and also helping protect irreplaceable files and priceless digital photo and music files stored on the PC by safeguarding the files on a second hard drive.

Security, Manageability, Collaboration Innovations for Business

Through a unique combination of technologies, the Professional Business Platform can help IT managers more easily protect their systems. For example, IT managers can keep their entire PC systems current on security patches using Intel AMT and ward off a variety of viruses through the Execute Disable bit, which is standard on the platform.

The Intel Professional Business Platform is part of the Intel® Stable Image Platform Program (SIPP) and delivers a complete package of advanced Intel technologies. Under Intel SIPP, the hardware and driver image of the platform will not change for at least 12 months from the start date of the program. This is particularly important to IT managers because it can help reduce the number of PC configurations they have to validate, therefore significantly reducing the cost and complexity of maintaining their desktop systems and the need to deploy new applications or security patches.

The platform also evokes improved models for the way people work together. The combination of such technologies as Intel GMA 950, Intel High Definition Audio and HT Technology opens the door to high-quality video, voice calling over the Internet and improved collaboration applications that make differences in geography transparent. The Intel GMA 950 graphics engine is also targeted to support the graphics capabilities in Microsoft’s next-generation of the Windows* operating system, code-named “Longhorn.”

“Microsoft and Intel are working closely together to deliver a totally new experience for mainstream business computing,” said Jim Allchin, group vice president of the Platforms Group at Microsoft Corporation. “The combination of the latest iterations of Windows and Office, such as the recently announced Office Communicator 2005, with the Intel Professional Business Platform, ensures the best experience for today’s business environments. Further, our planned next-generation version of Windows, code-named ‘Longhorn,’ will take advantage of the Intel Professional Business Platform to significantly advance reliability, security, collaboration capabilities and information processing.”

Intel expects business systems based on dual-core processors, including the Intel Pentium D processor to grow rapidly in 2005, targeted first at high-performance applications that emphasize computational processing or multi-media content development, and become mainstream on the 2006 Intel Professional Business Platform.

Both of Intel’s new platforms for the home and office come with additional features including Dual-Channel DDR2 at 667 MHz for higher speed memory, Intel® SpeedStep Technology for quieter and more energy-efficient systems, and Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology to support 64-bit computing.

Also, for the enterprise, Intel expects its next-generation single-processor server platform, based on the Intel chipset codenamed “Mukilteo,” to be available this summer for improved responsiveness in multi-threaded applications for entry-level servers that are dependable, and easy to deploy and manage. The chipset can be paired with either the Intel Pentium D processor or an Intel Pentium 4 processor with HT Technology.

Pricing and Availability

The Intel platforms launched today include the Intel Pentium D processor 840, 830 and 820 priced at US$530, US$316 and US$241 respectively in 1,000-unit quantities; the Intel Pentium 4 Processor supporting HT Technology 670 priced at US$851 in 1,000-unit quantities; and the Intel 945G and 945P Express Chipsets, priced at US$42 and US$38 respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities.

Systems and motherboards based on Intel’s new platforms are shipping today and will grow in volume with solutions available from major systems manufacturers and Intel® Resellers around the world. For more information visit
