WiMAX Signal Strength Fading in face of Strong Australian Mobile Broadband Proliferation, says IDC

 • 30 July, 2007 14:08

NORTH SYDNEY, July 30th, 2007 – IDC's latest analysis of the Australian mobile and wireless broadband markets, finds that mobile (cellular) technology has gained significant traction against wireless (WiMAX) technology in delivering ubiquitous, high-speed Internet access independent of fixed-line coverage.

"Mobile broadband services in Australia have garnered increasing interest led by key developments that have enhanced coverage and service capacity," observed Jerson Yau, Research Analyst, Wireless and Mobility Research, IDC Australia. He adds, "Mobile broadband offerings have taken a substantial lead in the Australian mobility broadband market with superior coverage and high speeds at competitive access costs. WiMAX broadband offerings must rapidly respond to these value propositions by the end of the decade or face relegation."

IDC’s study, titled "Australia Mobile and Wireless Broadband 2007-2011 Forecast and Analysis: Future Proof" is the fourth edition in IDC’s analysis series. The report presents IDC's five-year forecast of the Australian mobile broadband (MBB) and wireless broadband markets (WBB). The forecast provides an in-depth examination of the these competing mobility broadband markets, analysing service providers (SPs), industry stakeholders, and business and consumer segmentation against the competitive positioning of these service offerings. Industry trends, key announcements, market developments, as well as the interplay between MBB and WBB services are investigate to provide essential guidance for stakeholders.

IDC’s Key findings in this study are:

# In 2006, the Australian MBB market topped 287,000 subscribers contributing to A$115.7 million in service revenues. The WBB market, on the other hand, had 125,300 subscribers who generated A$100.3 million in service revenues.

# Throughout the five-year forecast period until 2011, MBB subscribers are expected to outnumber WBB subscribers by a healthy margin due to the high-tempo developments on the mobile platform owing to the 3.5G upgrade roadmap. WBB services are not expected to experience an upswing until the turn of the decade when greater certainty in the standard and commercial deployments using WiMAX equipment will occur.

# IDC recommends that mobility broadband service providers (SPs) –MBB and WBB providers – increasingly attack the greater broadband market with highly competitive pricing aligned with business and consumer expectations. These stakeholders should consider a heightened state of market aggressiveness against fixed-line broadband and upcoming municipal WiFi services if they hope to outplay their competitors.

# IDC recommends that MBB stakeholders leverage their current leadership in the Australian market by competing directly against fixed-line broadband offerings whilst bundling data plans on top of a business/consumer user's mobile handset for greater traction. WBB stakeholders are advised to balance aggressiveness with sustainable business models to be a long term player in the broadband market and not shy away from emphasising that WiMAX are also a smart bet.
