IDC Reveals Printing and Imaging Opportunities in SMBs

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, August 15th, 2007 - Almost half of small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Australia have only partial understanding of their printing and imaging cost, and do not monitor it actively. The insight comes from new research by IDC Australia, examining SMBs' printing and imaging usage patterns and buying behaviour.</p>
<p>"SMB users tend to exhibit a decidedly high preference for new technology and better specifications not too sure ‘better specifications’ is clear in this content?. However, there is a large gap between SMBs' perceived utility of printing and imaging hardware, and the actual benefit derived from it," observed Rishi Ghai, senior analyst and team leader for IDC's ANZ hardcopy peripheral research.</p>
<p>"For instance, despite a good 70% of SMBs preferring to deploy colour-capable devices, users' actual colour hardcopy output stood at only a quarter of the total, with the bulk of it in monochrome," added Ghai.</p>
<p>Small and medium businesses (SMBs) have come to play a definitive role in the Australia economy not merely as a community providing a wide range of indispensable products and services, but equally importantly, as a promising set of customers themselves. Perhaps the strongest indication of the growing might of SMB customers lies in the fact that they are etched on the marketing and sales radars of virtually every major technology and non-technology vendor. However, penetrating the SMB market successfully requires a detailed understanding of their needs and buying behaviour, and careful strategising. This is especially important, as beneath the blanket term "SMBs" lies an array of heterogeneous businesses with a multitude of diverse backgrounds and requirements.</p>
<p>"IDC's research also suggests that printing and imaging vendors need not target all organisations in the SMB spectrum with low priced offerings presuming a low purchasing power, as medium-sized businesses generally possess a significantly higher spending capacity as compared with their smaller counterparts," said Ghai.</p>
<p>IDC's research on SMBs covers organisations with less than 500 employees. Establishments with 1-99 employees are classified as Small Businesses, and those with 100-499 employees as Medium Businesses.</p>
