BigAir hoping to peak with new iBurst plans

BigAir is remoulding its iBurst wireless broadband plans to promote competition between Telstra and 3G providers.

The new plans offer specific data allowances for off and on-peak times. So a BigAir Mobile Card at 1024k/345k for $79.95 per month plan allows users to download 1000MB during peak-time and up to 2000MB in off-peak time (from midnight to 8am).

By comparison, a Telstra BigPond Wireless Broadband plan at 256k/64k for $79.95 allows only 1000MB of total download per month.

When data allowances are reached, BigAir shapes download speeds rather than charge for excess downloads. Additionally, shaping only affects respective time slots if data allowances are exceeded.

"People often buy things by brand name and we're highlighting a point that you can get much better value for money by looking at alternative services rather than looking straight to Telstra," BigAir Jason Ashton said.

Previously, BigAir did not have enough network capacity to offer large data allowances, but thanks to a recent hardware upgrade and implementation of traffic engineering systems the service is now available, Ashton said.

"The new iBurst plans are much better value than Telstra Bigpond [plans] and certainly much better value than any of the 3G offerings," he said. "However you can't just give away enormous amounts of data on these wireless broadband networks because it's a limited resource and you want to deliver consistent levels of service all the time."

Ashton said the new plans would be attractive to all users, but would be of particular use to professionals, SOHOs, and businesses that require larger than normal download limits.

BigAir's iBurst network coverage extends to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and the Gold Coast.
