AMD to release Athlon XP 2000+ processor

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will announce a new processor on Monday, a source close to AMD said Friday. Rival Intel also is expected to launch a new processor the same day.

AMD will unveil the Athlon XP 2000+, which will run at 1.67GHz. This chip will dethrone the Athlon XP 1900+, which runs at 1.60GHz, as its fastest chip for desktop computers, the source said.

Intel Corp., for its part, on Monday will launch the 2.2GHz Pentium 4 processor, the company's first based on the 0.13-micron Northwood core, which features 512K bytes of Level 2 cache. Current 0.18-micron Pentium 4 processors offer 256K bytes of cache.

Although its processors run at lower clock speeds, AMD says its chips can match Intel's performance because they can handle more work in a given clock cycle. However, an industry insider said Intel might have the industry edge with the 512K-bytes cache level. The AMD Athlon XP chips carry 384K bytes of cache.
