German government says Wi-Fi is dangerous

According to the government of Germany, Wi-Fi should be avoided because of the risks it may pose to health - and who ever heard of a German government making rulings based on irrational prejudice?

So, it's not only crackpots on the fringes of society who are espousing this oddball opinion. Even proper grown-ups are scared of Wi-Fi (albeit proper grown-ups who think it rational to claim leather hotpants as national dress).

Germany's official radiation protection body has advised the volk to use landlines instead of mobile phones. It's running scared of something called "electrosmog", which apparently seeps out of a wide range of everyday products, including baby monitors and electric blankets. That's right, the nation that produced Bismark, Beckenbauer and the Scorpions is scared of electric blankets. Not scared of David Hasselhoff, but scared of baby monitors. I ask you...

Following a series of questions by Green members of parliament the German Environment Ministry recommended that people should keep their exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi low by choosing "conventional wired connections".

The debate as to whether Wi-Fi is a killer is tedious in the extreme. Suffice to say that there's no hard evidence that it is dangerous, but plenty of hard evidence to prove that the intensity of Wi-Fi radiation is 100,000 times less than that of a domestic microwave oven.

So I reckon I'm still prepared to run the risk of using a mobile phone. Even in Germany. I may hang fire on the electric blanket, however, and if I find myself using a baby monitor in the next few months things have gone badly awry (but that has nothing to do with Wi-Fi).
