Former NetApp exec charged with embezzling US$90K

Funds used to pay personal expenses, including tuition at private high school

Former Network Appliance executive Bernadette Escue is scheduled to be arraigned in a US federal court on October 11 on a charge of embezzling more than US$90,000 from the storage vendor.

According to documents filed by US Attorney Scott Schools in the San Jose federal court last week, Escue used NetApp-issued corporate credit cards to pay for myriad unauthorized personal expenses between February 5, 2001 and October 31, 2003.

The court documents say that Escue served as NetApp's Global Transportation Manager and worked in the company's California headquarters.

In a statement, NetApp confirmed that Escue worked as business services manager for the firm between December 1, 2000 and November 6, 2003. That statement added: "It is inappropriate for us to discuss any other details of Ms. Escue's employment until the criminal proceedings against her have concluded."

Among the wire fraud allegations, Escue is accused of charging US$12,900 on a corporate credit card to pay tuition at a private high school, Drew School in San Francisco, according to the court documents.

In addition to restitution, Escue faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a US$1 million fine.
