Dell XPS m1730--a serious gaming laptop

Dell's newest gaming laptop

Dell updated its gaming notebook line with a new XPS m1730 model which adds a host of new game-centric aesthetic and hardware features. Notebook prices start at $US3000 and jump to $4480, according to prices on Dell.com.

The Dell m1730 supersedes the XPS m1710, which Dell says will continue to be sold for now. The m1730 packs an overclocked Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor, dual Nvidia SLI graphics processors, and Ageia's PhysX processor.

On the aesthetic side, the m1730 has an illuminated keypad, a new carbon-fiber industrial design (which comes in red, blue, or white), and perimeter lighting LEDs that flash red when you're fragged playing a first-person shooter game.

Another nice touch is a Logitech's GamePanel LCD display that sits next to the keyboard that lets you keep tabs on system performance.

Also notable is a full-sized keyboard with 10-key numeric pad, 2GB shared dual channel DDR2 RAM, a 17-inch wide-screen display, and 200GB hard drive (high-end model sports a 400GB hard drive).

The Ageia's PhysX, at least on paper, sounds like an interesting addition to the XPS line. The processor, Dell says, helps deliver realistic movement and environmental interaction in a game environment without degrading overall PC's performance.

This 16-by-11.9 x 2-inch 11-pound beast is missing little that a mobile gamer would want, except perhaps support for Blu-ray. The laptop was announced today at the Digital Life show here.
