Web footage of slain reporter prompts outrage

Footage of a Japanese journalist killed by a soldier in Myanmar has hit the Web, prompting outrage among viewers.

Dramatic footage of a Japanese journalist shot and killed during anti-government protests in Myanmar has drawn hundreds of thousands of viewers on YouTube, stirring outrage among viewers in Japan and elsewhere.

Cameraman Kenji Nagai, who worked for APF News, was shot by a Myanmar soldier during a September 27 crackdown on protestors in the city of Yangon. The video, of footage broadcast in Japan by Fuji TV, has been viewed nearly 500,000 times since it was posted to Google's YouTube video site on Sept. 29.

The footage shows armed Myanmar soldiers jumping out of a truck and chasing protestors. As the camera pans to the left, a shot can be heard and Nagai is seen falling as a soldier stands aiming a rifle at point-blank range. As the soldier walks away, Nagai can be seen moving on the ground, mortally wounded.

According to an APF executive quoted in an Associated Press report, Nagai was shot in the back.

APF News President Toru Yamaji arrived in Yangon on Saturday to identify Nagai's body, and was seeking the footage he was filming at the time of his death, according to a report by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The footage of Nagai's death has provoked outrage in Japan, where the government has demanded an explanation from the Myanmar government, and is mulling sanctions against the country. Hundreds of protestors staged demonstrations in front of the country's embassy in Tokyo over the weekend over the death and Myanmar's suppression of protests.
