USB-based network-assessment tool debuts

Catbird device fits in pocket, scans for vulnerabilities

Catbird, a US provider of in-the-cloud security services, has made available a USB thumb drive-based device called the Pocket V-Agent, which can be plugged into a PC to carry out a network-vulnerability scan and perform other security functions in conjunction with the Catbird managed service.

Howard Fried, director of sales and engineering, says the device can carry out a wide variety of tasks, including host discovery, a vulnerability scan based on Nessus, monitor gateways for availability and check password length on computers. "The assessment data is sent back from Pocket V-Agent to our data center so companies can check for policy compliance," he says.

The Pocket V-Agent, built on VMware's Pocket ACE virtual-machine player, is available as part of Catbird's managed security service, which costs about US$1.50 per user per month.
