Apple thaws MacBook, MacBook Pro keyboard freeze

Users report patch solves the Leopard-plaguing problem... mostly

MacBook and MacBook Pro users said on Apple's support boards today that a recent update has stopped the keyboard lockups that have plagued their notebooks running Leopard.

The MacBook/MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 that Apple posted to its download site Tuesday was meant to put an end to the intermittent freezes users had reported on several support message threads for more than a month. "Some MacBook and MacBook Pro systems may occasionally experience a temporary suspension of keyboard input which can last a minute or longer," Apple admitted in the brief description of the update.

Within days of Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard, launching in late October, MacBook and MacBook Pro owners began complaining of infrequent yet persistent keyboard freezes that left them unable to use their computers.

Reports on the update's effect have been generally positive. "I was having intermittent keyboard dropouts before, none so far since," said a user identified as "zig_k" on an Apple forum Tuesday.

But not everyone was completely satisfied. "So far so good. But keyboard still sometimes seems a bit unresponsive. No lock-ups though," reported another user, "daveinwoodland".

Users must have updated Leopard to 10.5.1 before applying the keyboard patch, Apple said.

The 979K update installer can be downloaded from Apple's Web site.
