Open source mobile contest lures developers

Mobile phones and cash up for grabs

Norwegian open source software company Trolltech has announced its first global contest for its Linux-based mobile phone platform, the Qtopia Greenphone Developer Challenge.

Entrants are encouraged to develop Linux-based applications using either the community or commercial version of Trolltech's Qtopia Phone Edition environment.

Announced last year as a project to foster more mobile handset manufacturers to ship Linux and open source software, the Greenphone includes software developed at Trolltech's Brisbane office.

The competition will consist of two phases. In phase one entries will be adjudicated across five categories, including best original application, best improvement of an existing Qtopia Phone Edition application, best end-to-end service, best user interface experience, and the best in the "impossible to classify" category.

Entries will be judged on a set of weighted, criteria including functionality, ease of use without written documentation, performance and efficiency, and originality.

All 25 phase one winners will receive a Qtopia Greenphone and be granted automatic entry into phase two.

Phase two will have two categories - the best open source and the best commercial application. Entries must be demonstrated on a Qtopia Greenphone and two entries will be chosen as the final Developer Challenge winners.

The final two winners will each receive $US5000, a Qtopia Phone Edition Professional licence, and a trip to Trolltech's annual developer conference.
