BitGravity debuts live video delivery network at DEMO

New CDN service is being used to stream DEMO live over the Web

BitGravity may not be the most well-known content delivery network vendor, but CEO Perry Wu is hoping that its new live video delivery network will make it a household name.

BitGravity, which specializes in high-speed content delivery, is unveiling its BG LiveBroadcast system at this week's DEMO conference in California. The system is designed to let companies send and receive high-definition video over the Internet with the kind of quality that BitGravity says rivals television. Wu says his company is primarily targeting large media companies in order to give them "high-quality broadcasting capabilities" for streaming live content over the Web.

The service has already drawn rave reviews from the DEMO Conference, which selected BG LiveBroadcast as one that is among the most likely to have a significant market impact in 2008. Additionally, DEMO will be using BG LiveBroadcast to produce a live stream of the conference throughout the week.

"BitGravity is changing the game of video content delivery on the Internet," says Chris Shipley, DEMO's executive producer. "With the introduction of BG LiveBroadcast, broadcasters can now adopt the 'Net as a live broadcast medium, and we are that much closer to parity between the Web and the traditional broadcast media."

The BG LiveBroadcast system is the result of the two years of work. Because it wanted its CDN to be dedicated to video broadcasting, the company built it from the ground up, which Wu says gives it an advantage over other CDNs.

"We're not trying to do innovative things at the application level," he says. "We're trying to do innovative things at the network level."

Gartner analyst Lydia Leong thinks BitGravity might have trouble attracting major media companies for its services, because many of those companies already have the capabilities to deliver live broadcasts over the Web. However, she thinks that the company's CDN is a significant differentiator that could be used by businesses that want to stream their events over the Web in high-quality video. She also notes that BitGravity's service seems to "be able to deliver content with very little buffer time needed," which she says should help it compete with similar services such as Akamai Media Delivery and Limelight's live video CDN services.

"Today it's relatively hard to be a new entry into the CDN market," says Leong, who thinks BG LiveBroadcast has a good chance of making an impact in live video delivery. "Companies need to come into the market technologically strong, and BitGravity is offering high bandwidth content that's being delivered with a fair chunk of instantaneity."
