Dimension Data Completes Full-Scale Internal Deployment of Microsoft Windows Vista SP1

 • 12 March, 2008 09:30

After successfully completing a 10-day pilot of Vista SP1, Dimension Data has now provided the upgrade to more than 300 Windows Vista desktops, meeting its goal of going into full production of the software update within four weeks of its official release to manufacturing.

“Our internal IT Services team, with invaluable assistance from our Microsoft Solutions Infrastructure engineers, has been busy testing various release candidates of Vista SP1 and we successfully deployed the software to a pilot group of 20 users, which has allowed us to iron out any application compatibility issues. We have now pushed out SP1 to all 300-plus Vista desktops using Microsoft SMS [Systems Management Server],” said Dimension Data’s Chief Information Officer, Anthony Stevens.

Dimension Data’s standard corporate desktop will remain a dual-operating environment with company’s desktop fleet running either Windows Vista SP1/Office 2007 SP1 or Windows XP/Office 2003. Officially, the standard build for Dimension Data’s corporate desktop is Windows Vista SP1/Office 2007 SP1.

“This is a really exciting time for us. Dimension Data is leveraging some strong benefits from SP1, in particular its enhancements to security and performance, as well as improvements to the stability of the operating system. Also, it gives our desktop application infrastructure the agility to operate as a managed environment – we can deploy a patch, or an application or a service pack within days of it being released. And our pilot has really demonstrated this,” said Mr Stevens.

Jeff Putt, Director, Windows Client Business Group, Microsoft Australia said: “Dimension Data’s gains in reliability, security and performance illustrate that there has never been a better time to upgrade to Windows Vista SP1. Windows Vista increases competitive advantage by enabling workers, whether in offices or working remotely, to find and use information more effectively through easier access to shared data and collaboration tools. In addition, IT staff will find Windows Vista enhances their corporate IT security through data protection, improved security features and automated backup, which makes the operating system more efficient and secure while also reducing support costs and downtime.”

David Hanrahan, Dimension Data’s General Manager of Microsoft Infrastructure Solutions said:
“Moving to Windows Vista SP1 enables businesses to leverage their existing Windows desktop application platform through the ability to manage a dual operating environment of both Windows XP and Vista seamlessly. Doing this allows them to keep costs down and ultimately optimise their desktop software infrastructure investment over the long-term.”

“By deploying Vista SP1 to its own users, Dimension Data is also a living example to our clients that SP1 works robustly in an enterprise environment and is making a difference to our business,” said Mr Hanrahan.
