Nortel Networks Enhances IBM eServer BladeCenter with Gigabit Ethernet LAN Switch

 • 10 September, 2003 12:40

Integrated Switching Enables ‘Always-Available,’ Infinitely Scalable Server Infrastructure

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] today unveiled an advanced Layer 2-7 Local Area Network (LAN) switch module for the IBM* eServer BladeCenter. Built to provide Gigabit connectivity and comprehensive LAN traffic management among the server blades of the IBM eServer BladeCenter, the switching module is designed to help increase performance, availability, security, scalability and manageability while minimizing total cost of ownership.

Enterprise and service provider customers will be positioned to transition large, complex data center operations into consolidated centers that provide greater availability, industry-leading scalability, capacity on demand and self-healing networking attributes with the IBM eServer BladeCenter equipped with the advanced Layer 2-7 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch module. The IBM eServer BladeCenter is among the first modular server platforms to offer advanced LAN switching in the blade server chassis, giving enterprise customers the ability to drive decreased costs associated with their data center infrastructure, including real estate, power consumption, training and maintenance costs.

“Enterprise customers are demanding reliable, available, and secure datacenter architectures. By deploying an eServer BladeCenter with an integrated layer 2-7 switch, enterprises will be put in a position to realize these goals while supporting the most demanding applications and reducing their data center total cost of ownership,” said Lucinda Borovick, program director, Datacenter Networks, IDC.

“By integrating the layer 2-7 switch into BladeCenter, we have increased manageability and ease of deployment while reducing the total cost to the customer,” said Jeff Benck, vice president, IBM eServer BladeCenter. “This is another proof point of the success of the “Blade Alliance Partnership” which was established to increase customer benefits while advancing blade technology.”

“The ability to integrate intelligent traffic and application management into the eServer BladeCenter enables businesses to reduce the complexity and expense of managing multiple devices that front-end servers. This is the perfect complement to IBM’s approach to consolidating the entire server infrastructure. The combined package offers companies an ‘always on, always available’ networking infrastructure designed to provide a higher return on investment,” said Atul Bhatnagar, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Data Networks, Nortel Networks.

The IBM eServer BladeCenter integrated with Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 GbE Switch module offers the best of computing and communications platforms in one integrated package to customers. The Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 GbE Switch module provides full Layer 2-7 intelligent traffic and application management capabilities at Gigabit speeds. This gives enterprise customers improved application availability, increased application performance, improved network scalability, simplified management, and bolstered security. Each eServer BladeCenter can accommodate up to four switch modules to meet the needs of the most complex data environments.

The introduction of the Layer 2-7 GbE Switch module supports Nortel Networks ‘One network. A world of choice’ enterprise vision, in which businesses of all sizes are able to better engage their customers, partners, suppliers and employees in a secure, converged environment, regardless of how or where they access the network.

The global blade server market is expected to grow to nearly US$6.1 billion by 2007, according to IDC.
