Education Institution Gives IPStor High Marks for Centralising Storage and Accelerating Data Backup and Recovery for its Schools and Sites across Western Sydney

PARRAMATTA, AUSTRALIA, May 19, 2005—FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage software solutions, today announced that Catholic Education Office (CEO) Parramatta has implemented FalconStor’s IPStor® Enterprise Edition software to optimise storage management costs, increase data availability, and maximise storage efficiency by centralising administration of its storage resources.

The CEO Parramatta serves about 42,000 students and 3,800 staff, supported by a small IT staff. Each remote site had been running between three and four servers, and the plan to replace 160 servers with 80 high-capacity ones meant that the cost of tape back-up would have dramatically and prohibitively increased. Facing the prospect of spiralling backup costs, CEO Parramatta chose an IPStor powered solution, recommended and implemented by PCS Australia Pty Ltd., a leading IT solutions provider. The chosen solution is providing CEO Parramatta a cost savings of more than 50% over an estimated $800,000 (AUD) proposal to continue with tape, or with a NAS-based solution deploying additional devices at each remote location.

“We wanted to find a cost-effective solution that would also overcome several environmental challenges, including the fact that many schools had non-IT staff performing storage maintenance in the absence of dedicated onsite IT personnel,” said Shane Wharton, IT infrastructure manager for CEO Parramatta. "With IPStor, we now have centralised storage on a SAN. If there's a disaster at a school, the backups are offsite, and our staff can retrieve files conveniently, rather than having to individually visit 80 remote sites.”

Initially, CEO Parramatta considered deploying backup software agents at each remote site, and then backing all their data over limited bandwidth to a central site. This approach was evaluated against the IPStor solution, and IPStor prevailed, as it proved to provide an automated and risk free way to achieve the storage objectives of the schools. The central office now operates as the single point of connection for all 80 sites, performing backup for schools and sites across Western Sydney.
