Nortel and DiData upgrade RMIT's data network

New networking infrastructure will provide RMIT with better videoconferencing and data streaming capabilities

Dimension Data has partnered with Nortel to upgrade RMIT University's data network. The deal is valued at $2 million.

Under the contract, which is expected to run over 12 months, Dimension Data will oversee the supply of equipment and provide implementation services. Corporate communications manager, Martin Aungle, said RMIT is one of the integrator's longest-standing clients, with the relationship dating back 10 years.

"We currently provide RMIT with technology and services in the datacentre, network infrastructure and security areas - the value of this particular contract is at the upper end for us," he said.

Dimension Data is the main Nortel educational client for the integrator, although the company maintains contracts with a number of other major Universities and TAFEs, including Deacon University and the University of Canberra, Aungle said.

The integrator will be replacing RMIT's 920 network switches with Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 4500s. RMIT's data core, which comprises Nortel ERS 8600 switches, will also be upgraded with 10-gigabit support in the near future. The upgrade is to support new, high-bandwidth services such as media streaming, YouTube feeds and videoconferencing for staff and students across 220 locations.

The RMIT deal follows Ballarat University's recent decision to upgrade its Nortel network with long-standing partner, 3D Networks.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
