McAfee treats enterprise customers to daily DATs

McAfee's enterprise customers will have access to virus definitions on a daily basis from next Friday.

Currently, McAfee provides DAT notification (virus definition data files) on a weekly basis for customers using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, McAfee WebShield, McAfee GroupShield and McAfee NetShield.

The free subscription-based Notification Service will send notifications to enterprise subscribers daily, Monday through Friday, including most holidays. Additional notifications will be sent when an emergency set of DATs has been released, due to a threat that AVERT assigns a medium risk or higher.

The company said it had moved to the daily distribution of DATs based on the increase of new threats it reported in 2004, according to a media statement.

"Last year we saw a tenfold increase in the number of virus submissions, a 250 per cent increase in the rate of new malware development and an increase of over 75 per cent in the number of emergency DAT releases," said Vincent Gullotto, vice president of McAfee AVERT.

McAfee Australia spokesperson Allen Bell said the new offer will see 3TB of data scanned daily for false positives.

"This is a huge impact on the back end. However, we address this effectively through caching and the use of technology to prevent denial of service attacks," he said.

Bell said McAfee planned to release daily DAT notification to its consumer customers in the next few months.
