PowerQuest Provides Crucial Second Line of Defense against Computer Viruses and Worms

 • 11 September, 2003 13:59

Separating critical data and creating regular backups are essential to achieve point-in-time recovery following a destructive attack from a computer virus or worm

SYDNEY, Australia – Sept 11, 2003 – The proliferation of sophisticated computer worms and viruses makes attacks on users’ systems virtually unavoidable. In the last few weeks alone, the MSBlaster worm infected an estimated 700,000 computers and is still actively attempting to infect other machines connected to the Internet. Other worms like Sobig.F, Slammer and Klez have the ability to spread rapidly via e-mail, striking many systems before most computer users can receive the necessary anti-virus patches to block the invasion. For example, approximately one out of every 17 e-mail messages became infected by Sobig.F in a matter of days*—a sobering reminder of how vulnerable computer users are to inevitable virus attacks.

PowerQuest® Corporation provides technology that helps computer users plan for and rapidly recover from damage caused by computer invasions. Bill Johnson, senior vice president at PowerQuest, says that every computer should have anti-virus software as a first line of defense against malicious viruses. He adds that a second line of defense is also necessary to provide "insurance" against system infections. "Anti-virus programs can’t provide a fix for a virus until it appears, making it impossible to stop every virus before it hits your computer," says Johnson. “Our software provides a valuable safety net for situations in which viruses or worms slip past the anti-virus software.”

PowerQuest’s patented technology allows users to separate their data by type using partitions, and then create backup images of entire drives or single partitions. This advance preparation allows for rapid recovery to a point in time before the system was attacked, resulting in a virus-free system.

Separate to Protect
Users can better protect and manage their data when their applications, operating systems and documents are organised on separate partitions. “By separating your operating system and applications from ‘heirloom data’ like digital pictures and other important family documents, you can plan separate backup strategies for each type of data,” says Johnson. Partitions improve hard drive organisation, which greatly simplifies the backup and recovery process. In addition, separating data, applications and operating systems may make it less likely for viruses to contaminate the entire drive. PowerQuest's PartitionMagic® 8.0 makes it easy for computer users of any experience level to partition a hard drive.

Backing It All Up
An excellent way to ensure rapid recovery from system infections or invasions is to create an exact backup image of a computer system. PowerQuest’s Drive Image® 7 for home users and V2i Protector™ 2.0 Desktop Edition for businesses provide an easy-to-use solution that allows users to quickly rollback their systems to the exact point in time in which their last backup image was created. The backup image can be stored in a separate partition, on a USB or FireWire device, or on removable media, such as writable CDs and DVDs. Since images can be scheduled to run automatically in the background, users simply establish how often they wish to back up, and then enjoy the peace of mind of knowing they always have an exact image to restore your system in case of emergency. Then if the computer is infected with a virus or worm, users can use the backup image to easily return their system to its pristine pre-virus state.

Drive Image 7 and V2i Protector 2.0 Desktop Edition use SmartSector™ technology to produce faster and more accurate restoration than file-by-file backups. “An exact image of the hard drive retains optimisations and settings lost in a file-by-file backup,” Johnson explains. “In addition to making the restoration faster, you save time by retaining the settings you created to make your system work at peak efficiency.”

Partitioning and backup imaging work together for maximum recovery from damage caused by potential virus infections or other computer invasions. In today's computing environments, this “second line of defense” has become a necessity rather than a luxury.
