CD Video Recorder
Outwardly appearing to be a comebination of an Apple computer and a video cassette player, the Terapin TX0002 is the first device we've seen that can record to standard recordable CDs. For those of you who can't quite afford the price tag of the expensive DVD video recorders, the Terapin will allow you to record your favourite TV shows by simply inserting a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc and using the video player-like controls.
In addition, you can record/re-record straight from your camcorder or standard video player into the Terapin - making the digitisation of ageing video collections and home movies easier than ever. You're not limited to playing back your recordings on just the Terapin, either, as you can play your recordings on PCs, DVD players and VCD (video-CD) players that can read CD-R or CD-RW discs.
The front of the unit features connectivity inputs such as left and right audio RCA connectors, a composite-video jack and an optical audio in port. The back panel sports S-video in and out ports in addition to RCA video in and out, analog audio in and out and S/PDIF digital audio in and out connectors.
The supplied remote control is fully featured and mirrors the standard playback and recording controls found on the front of the unit, but also adds buttons for some of the Terapin's extra functions, which include variable-speed slow motion playback, Time Search and Disc View. The latter splits the screen into nine windows, each displaying the first 25 seconds of each track/recording in sequence, allowing the easy selection of a scene from a track. This has obvious benefits over the days when fast forwarding was the only way to move through a recording.
