Customers a bargaining chip in Soul war

CIO innocent victim in Soul payment dispute.

A disgruntled partner has severed Internet connections to Soul Telecom customers and denied access to critical information housed in data centres in an effort to force the beleaguered telco to pay outstanding debts.

A furious customer told Computerworld that its 100Mbit link provided by data centre provider Equinix was cut without notice, after Soul had refused to clear outstanding debts to the company.

The CIO, who requested anonymity, said Equinix blocked its staff from accessing its severs housed in the company's Sydney data centre.

The enterprise-size Soul customer was unable to do routine back-ups and newly deployed administrative and financial systems were rendered inoperable.

"For the two things to happen on the same day beggars belief."

"If they are having a little war with Soul, why should customers be affected?

"The last thing you want is two vendors fighting about invoices, which creates a deniable service to our servers and systems."

He said other Soul customers have experienced similar outages due to the telco's bungle.

Equinix confirmed the outage, but did not return requests for an explanation why Soul customers were affected.

The service provider said the connections were reactivated after Soul paid its debts to the company.
