IDC Finds PC Market Hits 3 Million Units in 2004

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, February 16th, 2005 – IDC has recently released the preliminary results for the combined Australia (Desktop and Notebook) market for 4Q 2004. The results show the Australian PC market increasing by 9% sequentially and by 26% from the same period in 2003.</p>
<p>The PC market in Q4 saw a massive amount of notebooks fall below the retail $2000 mark which helped to drive sales during the final quarter of 2004. This is an important consideration as the delta between desktops and notebook continue to decline. Additionally, the strong performance to round-out 2004 came as a result of a buying season that was very strong in the consumer sector and was rejuvenated in the education sector. The strength of the economy, strong Aussie dollar, and no interest rises during Q4 2004 all helped to increase growth.</p>
<p>IDC found that both the desktop and notebook PC markets experienced growth. The desktop form factor grew by 20% year-on-year and notebooks by 41% over the same period.</p>
<p>The total performance for the PC market in 2004 was by far a record performance with over 3 million PCs shipped during the year. The total market grew by 22% from 2004 compared to the previous year. A key note is the share of notebook PCs of the total market, which grew from 24% in the previous year to 28% in the 2004.</p>
<p>"The market in 2004 was most certainly a strong year as it tipped 3 million units shipped. This has attracted interest from abroad and has caused the entrants of many new vendors into the market. This will translate to a very competitive market in 2005 as macroeconomic conditions, slowdown in refresh cycles, and maturing of IT spending help to slow down spending," stated Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst for PC Hardware.</p>
<p>"Looking at the vendor rankings, HP was able to gain back ground it lost in the third quarter and sat atop the Australian PC market yet again. In second place Dell was the only vendor other than IBM in the top 6 to lose market share from 3Q 2004 despite its aggressive pricing. The rising Acer grew its third place position on the back of a successful consumer business. The fourth quarter of any year is typically not strong for fourth place IBM, who has no pronounced consumer business. The two shining stars of the final quarter of 2004 were Toshiba and Apple who rounded out the top 6. Despite the increased competition in the notebook PC market Toshiba grew to the point of almost cracking into the top 4 of the total PC market. The largest sequential growth of all vendors in Q4 2004 went to Apple, which seems to be finally benefiting from the iPod halo effect," added Mr Sager.</p>
