Joint Efforts Deliver Best Practices for Utilizing EMC Automated Networked Storage with Oracle Database 10g

SYDNEY (OracleWorld) - September 10, 2003 - EMC Corporation today announced support for Oracle® Database 10g with EMC Automated Networked Storage systems and software. EMC and Oracle engineers are creating best-practices procedures to help thousands of mutual customers leverage the combined benefits of new Oracle Database 10g features with EMC networked storage systems and software.

EMC systems were utilised in the development and testing of Oracle Database 10g and Oracle has deployed over 500 terabytes of EMC storage in support of its business. Oracle 10g software is the first infrastructure designed for enterprise grid computing. The new storage features in Oracle Database 10g are being integrated with EMC's leading storage systems, software, storage networks and services to provide customers with an infrastructure that provides a platform for information lifecycle management and an overall lower cost of ownership.

EMC engineers working on-site with their counterparts at Oracle are developing joint best-practices to help customers exploit new features of Oracle Database 10g. The first initiative is in the area of backup and recovery using the new Oracle Database 10g Recovery Manager (RMAN) 'Flashback Recovery Area' feature and EMC CLARiiON networked storage systems with ATA (Advanced Technology-Attached) drives. Through this effort, EMC will deliver online, disk-based backup and recovery best practices using these technologies, enabling customers to more efficiently protect and restore their critical Oracle information, by backing up to and recovering from disk.

"EMC and Oracle continue to focus on ways to help customers better manage, share and protect their information in the most cost-effective manner," said Steve Redman, Managing Director of EMC Australia and New Zealand. "EMC has been working closely with Oracle to make it easier for customers to migrate to Oracle Database 10g and, most importantly, to take advantage of the advanced features that, when combined with the wide range of EMC systems and software enable information lifecycle management."

Juan Loaiza, Vice President of Systems Technologies at Oracle added, "Oracle Database 10g delivers a host of new technologies that improve the availability of mission critical systems while at the same time reducing their complexity. Oracle and EMC have worked closely to ensure Oracle Database 10g can be used to the fullest extent with EMC technology."

EMC & Oracle

EMC and Oracle have over 25,000 mutual installations, providing solutions for 90 of the Fortune 100 businesses. The two companies have had a strategic alliance since 1995. In 2002, EMC and Oracle established a Joint Service Center (JSC) staffed by service engineers from both companies to facilitate faster problem resolution for their shared customers and serve as a dedicated lab to duplicate customer environments for testing and benchmarks.
