Dell Computer plans to start selling Dell-branded projectors in the U.S. next month, and in the rest of the world later. The projectors can be connected to a computer to project what is displayed on the screen onto a whiteboard or other surface.
Dell already sells projectors from other vendors such as NEC Corp., said Jerele Neeld, a spokesman for the Round Rock, Texas, PC manufacturer. However, the Dell-branded devices may get a more prominent spot in Dell's online store, he said Wednesday.
"This is a new product category for Dell and it is one we think we can do well in," he said.
Neeld declined to provide details on pricing and types, or to name the manufacturer of the projectors.
Dell hopes to copy the success it says it has with the sales of its PowerConnect line of Ethernet switches, introduced last year. These switches are manufactured by a Taiwanese company and branded by Dell.
"The network switch space, although it is only a small part of our business, has been quite successful for us," Neeld said. He would not provide sales or market share figures.
