Bias Sound Soap washes out unwanted noise

The sound specialists at Bias Inc. have unveiled Bias Sound Soap, a new digital audio signal processing plug-in for Mac and Windows systems.

Steve Berkley, CEO and president of Bias, said it's the first professional-quality noise reduction solution that can also be used by average consumers.

Two adjustable knobs in the plug-in let users remove unwanted hiss, room noise, rumble, electrical hum, and other background noise from most digital media files, including digital video (DV) soundtracks, PowerPoint, and other presentation software soundtracks, Flash (and other Web-tool soundtracks), digital audio workstation tracks, cassette or other analog tape recordings that have been transferred to a Mac, and more. It can be used with such applications as Final Cut Pro, and Premiere.

Sound Soap works by removing "broadband" noise and removing low-frequency rumble, as well as hum: the 50Hz and 60Hz electrical "buzzing" sound common in many audio recordings. The software can even "intelligently" learn the difference between the noise and the desired audio, Berkley said.

It's due in the fourth quarter of the year. Pricing has yet to be announced. However, when Sound Soap is released, a free trial version will be available for download.
