The AT-RG656 is a full-featured broadband media gateway and router all in one

Sydney, 11 January, 2004 – Allied Telesyn, the end-to-end networking solutions vendor has announced the availability of the AT-RG656 Broadband Residential Gateway for service providers who deliver high-speed broadband access and applications to business and residential subscribers. It offers a full suite of services (including VoIP) in one cost-effective unit, and is environmentally hardened for outdoor deployment – it has no moving parts to fail or service, and can withstand extreme temperature highs and lows.

“With technology constantly changing, the market is wide open for service providers ready to deliver high-speed access and applications,” said Mark Jackson, Managing Director of Allied Telesyn (Australia). “There is a growing demand for broadband traffic combining video, voice and data. Therefore there is an urgent need for a single, cost-effective unit that offers a full suite of services, simply and cost-effectively to subscribers.

“The Allied Telesyn residential gateway fulfils that demand. It is an integrated voice, video, and data device offering inter-connectivity to local devices, and connectivity services to an external broadband network – all through a single unit,” he said.

The AT-RG656 is a high-density FTTx gateway, 6 port wirespeed Layer 2 switch and broadband router all in one. It is designed for outdoor deployment with its enhanced temperature range of up to 65°C and delivers advanced Triple Play voice, video and data services to the customer over FTTx networks.

The AT-RG656 offers a comprehensive range of optical interfaces in order to provide connection to remote users. For example, the 100FX bi-directional optical interface requires only one single strand of single-mode fibre for connection to the WAN. An integrated Stateful Inspection Firewall (SPI) with Network Address Translation (NAT) and Denial of Service detection provides enhanced security for customers’ networks.

The AT-RG656 provides queuing and rate limiting of egress and ingress traffic on each with a granularity of 64Kbps. This feature allows the service provider to offer differentiated services to each customer and protect its network from malicious packet flooding.

The Allied Telesyn AT-RG656 residential gateway offers a choice of Voice over IP signalling methods and different voice encoding algorithms. It is also packed with features such as numerous mechanisms to provide Quality of Service (QoS) including the Type of Service (ToS) field in the IP packet and priority tagging of voice traffic using IEEE 802.1p. Using the available QoS mechanisms, service providers can ensure that applications receive the priority they require in order to provide reliable and high quality voice and video. The AT-RG656 allows the connecting of three standard analogue phones, modems or fax machines.
Video Streaming on the AT-RG656 offers unique features to optimise the delivery of video content to customers including the support for separate VLAN’s for video traffic, IGMP snooping and proxying. The AT-RG656 supports full IGMP snooping capability and individual LAN ports can receive different multicast transmissions (e.g. different movies or TV channels).

The AT-RG656 is easy to both provision and manage. It is designed for high-volume deployment and this is reflected in the Zero Touch Configurator (ZTC) devices that can be deployed with no user intervention. ZTC is a distributed configuration system based on the industry-standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). ZTC provides intelligent and automatic configuration of remote units.

The AT-RG656 also offers conventional management and configuration interfaces such as local console port (using Command Line Interfaces), Telnet (using Command Line Interfaces) and SNMP v1/v2/v3.
