Java brings mobile gaming to Sony Ericsson phones

In a move intended to smooth the deployment of online gaming services, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB has signed a licensing and cooperation agreement with Sun Microsystems for Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) technology, Sony Ericsson announced Tuesday.

Under the multiyear agreement, which was signed in December, Sony Ericsson will offer J2ME support in its mobile phones for games and multimedia applications, the company said. While Java support is useful for many different types of applications, Sony Ericsson expects that mobile gaming will benefit the most from the adoption of Java support, allowing users to download and install new games and new game levels.

The company plans to release a Java software development kit (SDK) for its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) phones to third-party developers later this month, it said.

In a related announcement, Sony Ericsson Tuesday introduced three new handsets that incorporate Java support: the T62u GSM/TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) handset for North America and the Symbian OS-based P800 and the Z700 gaming phone, which also offers polyphonic sound as well as two mobile games: Men In Black and Charlie's Angels. The phones, which join two existing models for the Japanese market that include Java support, are expected to be available later this year.

The two mobile games that will ship with the Z700 are being made available as part of a partnership agreement between Sony Ericsson and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Music Entertainment Inc. and Sony Europe GmbH. Under the terms of that agreement, the four companies plan to work together to develop and market multimedia content for mobile phones, the companies said in an announcement Tuesday.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
