E3 State of the Industry Keynote: What, Me Worry?

Just what does one of gaming's dinosaurs think of gaming?

Just what does one of gaming's dinosaurs think of gaming? Read on to find out.

Mike Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, gave his State of the Industry keynote on Wednesday. His address, however, failed to address the ESA's biggest problem -- the loss of some of its most important members.

Gallagher opened by discussing gamings incredible growth, its appeal to an ever widening demographic, its use as a not only as a source of entertainment but as a training tool, and gaming's technological advances. He then introduced the ESA Essential Facts Booklet, the annual pamphlet of statistics on sales, demographics, and usage data for the previous year. Gallagher wrapped up his speech by "challenging" the industry to remember its fan base, welcome new gamers, broaden the use of games, help increase parental awareness, and unite to support policy interests.

While Gallagher did take some brief swipes at politicians who blame gaming for everything from childhood obesity to violence, he never took any questions so he never addressed the large crack in the ESA's previously impenetrable armor.

Why did Activision, Vivendi, id, and LucasArts, and others leave? Are you trying to get them back? Where does this leave the ESA and the future of E3?
