New IEEE wireless spec based on Bluetooth

The Standards Board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has approved IEEE 802.15.1, a standard for wireless personal area networking (PAN). The new standard is adapted from portions of the Bluetooth wireless specification.

IEEE licensed technology from the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. to adapt and copy a portion of the Bluetooth spec as base material for IEEE 802.15.1, according to the organization. The new IEEE standard is fully compatible with Bluetooth 1.1.

Bluetooth is an short-range personal wireless networking scheme developed for laptops, desktop computers, printers, PDAs, cell phones, and other data appliances.

Ian Gifford, IEEE 802.15 Working Group vice chair, said that IEEE 802.15.1 provides greater validity for the Bluetooth specification, as well as added support in the marketplace. "This collaboration is a good example of how a standards development organization and a special industry group (SIG) can work together to improve an industry specification and also create a standard," said Gifford.

At Macworld Expo in Tokyo, Japan this week, Apple announced forthcoming support for Bluetooth in Mac OS X. The company also announced the Bluetooth USB Adapter, which enables USB-equipped Macs to transfer data to and from Bluetooth-equipped devices.
