The Optometrists Association Australia (OAA) has warned that Australian office workers are at a high risk of computer eye fatigue.
Some studies indicate that as many as 48 percent of office workers suffer from the disorder, which causes vision problems and deterioration of eye health.
Symptoms include sore, red eyes associated with computer use, headaches that become more severe when staring at a computer screen, and blurred distance vision after work.
The OAA recommends that workers who spend a large amount of time focusing on a computer screen take regular two-minute breaks away from their desks, ideally every hour.
The peak body also recommends that everybody, particularly office workers, should have an eye exam every two years.
