Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 released

Speech recognition no longer a black art?

Nuance Communications has released version 10 of its popular Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software boosting performance, accuracy and application support.

Nuance claims Dragon 10 is nearly twice as fast as the previous release and can be up to 99 percent accurate.

"Significant improvements to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking recognition system have yielded an accuracy improvement of up to 20 percent over the previous release," according to the company.

New "Dragon Voice Shortcuts" can be used to perform multi-step tasks, including sending e-mails to people and conducting Web searches. Formatting text with voice commands is also an option.

Some editions will be offered with a Bluetooth headset.

Managing director of Boyden Global Executive Search Ian Wilson said Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 has noticeable improvements in response speed and accuracy.

"The new search functionality features can significantly enhance productivity," Wilson said. "For me, one of the most satisfying aspects of using Dragon NaturallySpeaking is being able to capture thoughts and concepts quickly."

Asia Pacific director of mobile and consumer products at Nuance Bob Anderson said speech technology has reached a "critical turning point" where it is now changing the way that we interact with the world around us.

"There's no need to take time to train the software or learn arcane steps or commands anymore - people can simply start talking and see their ideas flow directly onto the page," Anderson said.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is available now with pricing beginning at $149.95 for the Standard edition to $1099.95 for Professional.
