ADSL2+, faster, further without phone

Internode pushes ADSL2+ out to 7.5km.

Naked ADSL2+ broadband can cover three kilometres more than Internet access services which require an active fixed telephone line, according to Internode.

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) claims naked ADSL2+ operating on the Unbundled Local Loop (ULL) can service an area 124 square kilometres larger than other fixed line technology because it is not restricted by spectrum sharing.

The Spectrum Sharing Service (SSS) allows voice and data to travel on the same copper wire using high and low frequencies.

Internode managing director Simon Hackett said with its newly launched NakedExtreme service, it can push DSL out a further 3.4km to 7.5km by operating naked ADSL through its own DSLAMs.

“As well as mandating additional line rental costs for the customer, a SSS restricts the distance we can deliver broadband to about 4.1km from the local telephone exchange – any further and our customer connection attempt is rejected with the declaration ‘Transmission Loss Too High’,” Hackett said.

“That message occurs if the line produces a signal attenuation over its length exceeding the allowable limit for a traditional analogue voice service.”
