Guitar Hero - the movie?

Guitar Hero video game causes Hollywood to stir

In an interview on MTV’s gaming Web site, American film director Brett Ratner expressed interest in producing a movie based on the Guitar Hero video game series. In the interview, Ratner (whose previous film credits include Rush Hour Red Dragon and X Men: The Last Stand) claimed to be in talks with the game’s publisher, Activision, to produce a feature-length film based on the franchise.

“I love Guitar Hero and I think it’s a part of pop culture”, he said. “I’m trying to convince them [Activision], but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie.” According to Ratner, his vision for the film would involve a kid from a small town who wins a Guitar Hero competition and dreams of becoming a rock star. “[It's] one of these dreams-come-true kind of concepts”, Ratner explained.

Guitar Hero is a rhythm-action based music game made famous by its guitar-shaped peripheral. To date, the series has sold more than 21 million units and made over $1 billion in the US alone. Interestingly, Ratner is also attached to another video game adaptation: Sony Computer Entertainment's God of War.
