Sydney – September 3, 2008 – Kroll Ontrack®, a leading provider of data recovery and legal technologies products and services, today announced the addition of a new home user recovery service to its Ontrack® Data Recovery portfolio to better serve individuals and their growing recovery needs. This offering directly addresses a recent surge in individual recovery requests paired with research that revealed digital photos are second only to Microsoft® Office files as the most requested files for recovery.

Specifically, Kroll Ontrack’s home user recovery service includes:

• A $495 flat-rate including GST.

• Recovery of files on a single media or drive.

• 28-day turnaround.

• Backup price set at $120 inclusive of GST.

• A free report listing of recovered files and photos e-mailed to the individual.

• Data recovered in state of the art Clean Rooms.

Today, there are many types of digital storage media available, ranging from tiny memory cards that come bundled with cameras to high-capacity microdrives. Regardless of the format, it is a known fact that people are trusting their photos to a different media than traditional film – and with that new media, comes new problems. Instead of overexposure or a damaged roll of film, individuals have to deal with corrupted files and media damage. Most digital media is formatted with the FAT file system for data storage and organisation. When this file system gets corrupted or damaged, the device that uses the memory card cannot find the data and the information is deemed “lost.” Even though it still exists on the memory card, the data is inaccessible.

Other common casues of lost digital photos include:

Reformatting – reformatting a memory card or storage device removes all previously stored files.

Overwriting – accidental overwriting of images stored on camera memory cards with new photos.

Media destruction – cracked, bent, burned or broken memory cards may cause failure resulting in unreadable media.

Water damage – water may damage smart media to the extent that photos can’t be viewed.

“With more digital cameras sold in Australia last year than ever before and because digital media can suffer from damage or corruption like computers, losing precious, irreplaceable photos is a very plausible experience for many Australians,” said Adrian Briscoe, Asia-Pacific General Manager, Kroll Ontrack. “Fortunately, recovery is often feasible and Kroll Ontrack has both the expertise and experience to help recover cherished memories.”
