Dimension Data Details Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Dimension Data’s 2008 Submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project Published
 • 23 September, 2008 12:00

Dimension Data announced today that it has published its submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP6). One of 3000 companies worldwide requested to complete a submission this year, Dimension Data has provided a candid response disclosing the company’s greenhouse gas emissions data, its corporate programme to address climate change, and some of the measures the Group has already undertaken to reduce the environmental impact of its operations around the world.

Dimension Data’s submission to CDP6, completed with the assistance of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Sustainability & Climate Change Services, was an important first step in baselining Dimension Data’s greenhouse gas emissions around the globe, explains Merle Singer, Global Lead – Sustainability, Dimension Data.

“Dimension Data is committed to the need to address the effects of climate change. As this was our first year to formally participate in CDP6, it was important that we took the time needed to accurately measure and report on our baseline greenhouse gas emissions,” said Ms Singer.

“From this position, we will continue to work with PwC to develop a Carbon Management Plan, to establish our future carbon reduction initiatives and goals. However, our long-term objective centres on implementing an Environmental Management System, to establish a process and governance framework for our global operations, which currently extend across 47 countries.”

Dimension Data’s environmental sustainability programme is based on three pillars: licence to operate; go-to-market; and staff engagement. Each of these pillars is equally important and interconnected in our efforts to tackle climate change issues, explains Singer.

“As an example, in early staff engagement work we have estimated that the combined annual personal carbon footprint of our Australian staff is three times the overall carbon footprint of the Australian organisation. If we were only interested in reducing our corporate environmental impact and not that of our people, any improvement we make would be a pretty hollow victory. So, we have also undertaken an awareness and education programme with staff in a number of regions in an attempt to positively influence our people’s impact on the environment.”

While the CDP6 submission and the development of the Carbon Management Plan are important components of the licence to operate pillar of Dimension Data’s environmental sustainability programme, the company was also able to turn the experience into go-to-market services and solutions for its clients.

“Across the world, Dimension Data and its stakeholders have put the issue of the environment as a number one priority in their business practices,” says Singer. “To address this, Dimension Data has developed a suite of consulting services – Office Sustainability Services – that are designed to help an office-based organisation build and execute its response to climate change.”

From a solutions perspective, in its CDP6 submission Dimension Data has outlined a number of important carbon emission reduction projects undertaken by the business. For example, in Dimension Data’s North American business, a reconfiguration of its data centre using server consolidation and virtualisation options reduced energy consumption by 50 percent. An occupancy sensor-based lighting system was implemented in Dimension Data’s head office campus in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has been documented as reducing energy usage by 85 percent. In Dimension Data’s European operation, its telephony environment consolidated from eight separate locations and 30 servers into just two sites and six servers.

Dimension Data’s submission is available on both the CDP website at www.cdproject.net and Dimension Data’s website at www.dimensiondata.com/EnvironmentalSustainability.
