Acer adds TV capability to new Aspire PCs

Showcasing its efforts to bring entertainment capabilities to the home PC, Acer Inc. plans to display the latest additions to its Aspire line of PCs, which offer the ability to receive and record TV shows, at the Computex 2002 exhibition to be held here this week.

Both the Aspire M500 and Aspire G600 come equipped with integrated TV capture cards that allow users to receive and record TV shows. In addition, both PCs can function as an audio CD player when they are off, allowing users to listen to music without having to start Windows.

The M500 and G600 are based on Intel Corp.'s Pentium 4 processor and include TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) monitors, a wireless keyboard and optical mouse.

In addition to USB and IEEE1394 support, the M500 and G600 also offer support for memory cards, such as Sony Corp.'s Memory Stick, which allow users to transfer files directly from other devices, such as a digital still camera or video camera, to their PC.

Pricing and detailed specifications of the M500 and G600 were not immediately available.

In addition to the M500 and G600, Acer is also expected to display a handheld device with built-in wireless LAN capabilities, among other previously announced products, such as its Tablet PC prototype unveiled last year.

Computex opens on June 3 and will be held through June 7.
