Is broadband performance on the rise?

Uptime and performance are always key issues with broadband services, but the good news is that Australia's broadband performance is on the rise. This story on ARN has all the nitty gritty details. It shows that performance improved in the fourth quarter of 2008, over the third quarter. The report, conducted by a global broadband benchmarking firm called Epitiro, measured such things as ping time, DNS response and email delivery.

Personally speaking, I experienced only minor issues throughout 2008, all them relating to unexpected outages, which didn't last long at all. In fact, since I moved to a broadband connection in 2003 with iiNet, I have had little to complain about. The service has been pretty much available any time I want to use it and the speed has been swift. It's even swifter now I am getting over 16Mbps on my ADSL2+ account!

But mine might be a rare story of happiness with my ISP. E-mail in and let me know if you've experienced any horror stories with your ISP. Any excessive downtime problems? Poor speeds during peak times? If you have a gripe, bring it on. I'm willing to bet that those of you who use ISPs such as iiNet, Internode or Exetel will have nothing bad to say about your broadband experiences, but those of you with Dodo or TPG might be singing a different tune.

I've experienced some horror speeds on TPG accounts and the worrying thing is that the owners of those accounts are so used to the slow speeds during peak hours that they don't really care. In fact, they are happy that their connection works at all. It's funny that TPG ranked above iiNet in the Epitirio measurement, considering my vastly different experiences with both ISPs. Of course, a better barometer would be to visit Whirlpool and sift through the vast amount of posts for each ISP to determine which one seems to be most reliable.

Once thing's for certain though, a report like this is encouraging. We all want more reliable and faster Internet access. The next step is for a report on data quotas and the raw deal we're getting compared to other countries. Of course, the better reliability of our ISPs probably stems from the fact that our pipes aren't clogged with data as everyone is shaped to a speed too slow to effectively use them!
