AIT technology, a result of 50 years of Sony innovation and technological expertise in magnetic recording techniques and mechanisms, is characterized by 8mm recording media in a compact 3.5-inch drive form factor, a helical-scan recording technique, unique Remote Memory-In-Cassette (R-MIC) capabilities and the use of Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) media. AIT, with the industry’s highest areal density, offers greater capacity per sq/inch than any other data tape technology in the world.

Sony is the only tape storage company to ship a total of four generations of AIT drives and media within the same format simultaneously, giving end-users a wide-ranging choice in capacity levels, convenient interfaces (USB, IEEE 1394, ATAPI and SCSI) and configurations from stand-alone drives to automated solutions to address their various storage needs.
