MS eschews reports it will charge for added security

Clearing up comments made by a Microsoft Corp. executive at a security conference in Paris earlier this week, a company spokesman said Wednesday the software maker was not considering charging for additional security options within its products.

"You will not see price upgrades for additional security in our software," Microsoft Spokesman Rick Miller said.

The clarification came after Microsoft Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Craig Mundie commented at the RSA Conference on tech security that the company may offer new security capabilities on a paid basis.

Mundie was referring to the possibility that the Redmond, Washington, software maker may offer security products "separate and distinct" from Microsoft's core products down the road, Miller said.

The spokesman added that Microsoft has invested some US$100 million in its new trustworthy computing push to provide customers with added security within their products.
