Intel creates CAD group under Web3D Consortium

The Web3D Consortium now has another advocate in Intel Corp., which has created the organization's CAD (computer-aided design) 3-D Working Group to help develop standards for 3-D Web graphics used in CAD applications, it said Tuesday at SIGGRAPH in San Antonio.

Standards for Web 3-D (three dimensional) graphics are varied and incomplete, according to Intel, and it is launching this group in hopes of enabling businesses to make greater use of 3-D graphics in design and on their Web sites. Because CAD applications are currently responsible for most 3-D data, Intel and its partners will concentrate on that area first.

The push for 3-D graphics standards is spearheaded by the Web3D Consortium, a group of companies developing standards for 3-D graphics on the Internet, such as intellectual property rights, source code management, and the interoperability of MPEG (Moving Pictures Expert Group) files with standards developed for 3-D graphics.

Several other companies are participating in the Working Group with Intel: 3DLabs Inc., Actify Inc., Adobe Systems Inc., ATI Technologies Inc., The Boeing Co., Dassault Systemes, i2Dimensions Inc., Lattice Technology Inc., Microsoft Corp., mental images GmbH & Co. KG, Naval Postgraduate School, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Parallel Graphics Ltd., SGDL Systems Inc., and Tech Soft America/OpenHsf.
